Unmasking the Most Common Harmful Ingredients in Skincare Products

In today's world, the skincare industry is booming, offering an array of products that promise to deliver the flawless complexion we all crave. However, not all that glitters is gold. While many skincare products are formulated to enhance our beauty, some contain harmful ingredients that can do more harm than good. In this blog post, we'll uncover some of the most common harmful ingredients found in skincare products and why you should steer clear of them.

1. Parabens:

Parabens, such as methylparaben and propylparaben, are preservatives commonly found in skincare and beauty products. They extend the shelf life of these products by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and mold. However, there is growing concern about their potential link to hormonal disruption and breast cancer. Opt for paraben-free products to protect your health.

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES):

These foaming agents are often found in cleansers, shampoos, and body washes. While they create that luxurious lather, they can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Moreover, SLES can be contaminated with a carcinogen known as 1,4-dioxane. Look for SLS and SLES-free alternatives for a gentler cleanse.

3. Fragrance:

The term "fragrance" may sound innocuous, but in many skincare products, it's a catch-all for a cocktail of synthetic chemicals that can be irritating and allergenic. Fragrance can cause skin sensitivity, headaches, and even interfere with hormones. Opt for fragrance-free or products scented with natural essential oils.

4. Mineral Oil:

Mineral oil is a common ingredient in moisturizers and is derived from petroleum. While it creates a barrier on the skin's surface to lock in moisture, it can also clog pores, exacerbate acne, and prevent the skin from breathing. Choose skincare products that use natural, non-comedogenic oils for hydration. In our products we use only organic essential oils such as coconut, almond, castor and olive.

5. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives:

Formaldehyde and its releasing agents, like DMDM hydantoin and diazolidinyl urea, are used as preservatives in cosmetics. They can cause skin irritation and have been classified as potential carcinogens. Seek products free of these chemicals.

6. Phthalates:

Phthalates are often used in fragrances and can disrupt hormones, potentially leading to reproductive and developmental issues. To avoid exposure, choose phthalate-free products.

7. Retinyl Palmitate:

While vitamin A is excellent for the skin, retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A, can become problematic when exposed to sunlight. It has been associated with an increased risk of sunburn and potentially promoting skin damage. Use sunscreens without this ingredient when you plan to be outdoors.

The quest for healthy, glowing skin should not compromise your overall well-being. As consumers, it's crucial to educate ourselves about the ingredients in our skincare products and make informed choices.

In My Ixchel we craft our products with harmony of nature and human in mind and heart. We don't use any of those harmful ingredients mentioned above which gives our products healing traits.  Many of our customers noticed a difference and healed skin after couple of weeks using MyIxchel.
